Kenti yeniden okumak: Andy Merrifield’in Metromarksizm’i üzerine bir inceleme

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Andy Merrifield’ın kentsel süreçleri Marksist bir perspektifle ve biyografik bir anlatıyla ele aldığı Metromarksizm: Şehrin Marksist Bir Hikayesi adlı eserinin kapsamlı bir incelemesini sunmaktadır. Merrifield, kenti yalnızca fiziksel bir yerleşim alanı ya da binalar bütünü olarak değil; sermaye birikim sü reçlerinin ve sınıf mücadelesinin diyalektik bir sahası olarak kavramsallaştırmaktadır. Eser, Marx’tan En gels’e, Lefebvre’den Harvey’e uzanan geniş bir düşünsel yelpazeyi kentsel deneyimle bütünleştirerek, teoriyi sokağın ritmiyle bütünleştiren özgün bir ‘romans’ boyutu sunar. İnceleme kapsamında mekânın üretimi (production of space), gösteri toplumu (society of the spectacle), toplu tüketim (collective con sumption) mekanizmaları, sermayenin mekânsal onarımı (spatial fix) ve kentsel estetik gibi temel izlek ler, modern kentin gündelik yaşam deneyimi üzerinden detaylı biçimde analiz edilmektedir. Çalışma ay rıca, Batı-merkezli bakış açısı ve toplumsal cinsiyet perspektifinin eksikliği gibi eleştirel tartışmaları da odağına alarak kitabın çağdaş akademik literatürdeki konumunu ve güncelliğini titizlikle değerlendir mektedir. Sonuç olarak bu inceleme Metromarksizm’in günümüz kentsel toplumsal hareketleri, mekânsal adalet arayışı ve ‘şehir hakkı (right to the city)’ mücadelesi için sunduğu teorik imkânları, me todolojik sınırlılıkları ve kentsel politikaya dair dönüştürücü potansiyeli kapsamlı biçimde ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.

This study presents a comprehensive review of Andy Merrifield’s Metromarxism: A History of the City, in which he examines urban processes from a Marxist perspective and through a biographical narrative. Merrifield conceptualizes the city not merely as a physical settlement or a collection of buildings, but as a dialectical arena of capital accumulation and class struggle. The work integrates the theoretical lega cies of Marx, Engels, Lefebvre, and Harvey with urban experience, offering an original “novelistic” di mension that combines theory with the rhythm of the streets. The review analyzes key themes such as the production of space, the society of the spectacle, mechanisms of mass consumption, the spatial repair of capital, and urban aesthetics through the lens of everyday urban life. The study also addresses critical issues, including the Western-centric perspective and the absence of gender analysis, situating the book within contemporary academic literature. Ultimately, this review aims to comprehensively highlight Metromarxism’s theoretical contributions, methodological limitations, and transformative po tential for contemporary urban social movements, spatial justice, and the “right to the city” struggle.
