Evaluation of the effect of geriatric nursing course on nursing students’ attitudes toward ageism

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a Geriatric Nursing course on nursing students’ attitudes toward ageism. Methods: This descriptive and comparative study was conducted with 48 nursing students enrolled at a university. Data were collected using a Student Information Form and the Attitudes Toward Ageism Scale. The scale was administered twice, before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the course. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate parametric and non-parametric tests. Results: The majority of participants were female (91.7%), with a mean age of 20.58 ± 1.11 years. Among the students, 41.7% had experience in caring for older adults, and 72.9% had taken a course on older adult health/care. Comparisons between pre-test and post-test scores revealed a significant decrease in the “Limiting the Life of Older Adults” subscale (p=0.020) and a significant increase in the “Negative Ageism” subscale (p=0.008). No significant difference was observed in the total scale score between pre-test and post-test (p=0.99). A significant difference was found between post-test total scores and students’ clinical experience with older adults (p<0.05). Furthermore, strong (ρ=0.75–0.86; p<0.001) and moderate (ρ=0.49; p<0.001) positive correlations were observed between the total scale score and subscale scores. Conclusion: The Geriatric Nursing course was found to be effective in reducing nursing students’ negative attitudes toward older adults. These findings highlight the importance of integrating courses and practical experiences related to older adult care in nursing education to improve attitudes. It is recommended that nursing students’ clinical experience with older adults be increased and that course content be enriched to raise awareness of ageism.Amaç: Bu araştırma, Geriatri Hemşireliği dersinin öğrenci hemşirelerin yaşlı ayrımcılığına ilişkin tutumları üzerindeki etkisini değerlendirmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı ve karşılaştırmalı nitelikteki bu çalışma, bir üniversitede öğrenim gören 48 öğrenci hemşire ile yürütülmüştür. Veriler, Öğrenci Bilgi Formu ve Yaşlı Ayrımcılığı Tutum Ölçeği ile toplanmış; ölçek ders öncesi (ön-test) ve ders sonrası (son-test) olmak üzere iki kez uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler tanımlayıcı istatistikler ile uygun parametrik ve non-parametrik testler kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: Katılımcıların %91,7’si kadın olup, yaş ortalaması 20,58 ± 1,11 yıl olarak belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin %41,7’si yaşlı bireylere bakım deneyimine sahipken, %72,9’u yaşlı sağlığı/bakımı dersi almıştır. Ön-test ve son-test karşılaştırmalarında, ‘Yaşlının Yaşamını Sınırlama’ alt boyutunda anlamlı bir azalma (p=0,020), ‘Olumsuz Ayrımcılık’ alt boyutunda ise anlamlı bir artış (p=0,008) bulunmuştur. Buna karşın, toplam ölçek puanı açısından ön-test ve son-test arasında anlamlı bir farklılık saptanmamıştır (p=0,99). Son-test toplam ölçek puanı ile yaşlı bireylerle ilgili klinik deneyime sahip olma arasında anlamlı fark ark belirlenmiştir (p<0,05). Ayrıca, toplam ölçek puanı ile alt boyutlar arasında güçlü (ρ=0,75–0,86; p<0,001) ve orta düzeyde (ρ=0,49; p<0,001) pozitif ilişki saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Geriatri Hemşireliği dersinin, öğrenci hemşirelerin yaşlılara yönelik olumsuz tutumlarını azaltmada etkili olduğu görülmüştür. Bu bağlamda, hemşirelik eğitiminde yaşlı bakımına ilişkin ders ve uygulamaların tutumların geliştirilmesi açısından önemli olduğu söylenebilir. Öğrenci hemşirelerin yaşlı bireylerle klinik deneyimlerinin artırılması ve ders içeriklerinin yaşlı ayrımcılığına yönelik farkındalık kazandıracak şekilde zenginleştirilmesi önerilmektedir.
